Boundaries at Work

When expectations become unreasonable, behaviour crosses a line or commitments repeatedly go unmet, staying silent can allow the problem to grow. Boundaries at Work explores practical skills for recognising when a boundary is needed, speaking up earlier and addressing difficult behaviour while protecting working relationships and results.

When workloads become unreasonable, expectations aren’t met, or someone’s behaviour starts affecting the work, people face a choice: address the issue or stay silent. Speaking up can feel difficult, particularly when there is a difference in authority or concern about how the other person might respond. But repeated silence can allow frustration, resentment and unresolved problems to build.

Boundaries at Work: How to Speak Up, Strengthen Accountability, and Improve Results explores how to recognise when a workplace boundary is needed and how to address difficult behaviour in ways that protect both relationships and results. It explains why healthy boundaries help make problems discussable sooner, allowing people to clarify expectations and address issues before they become established patterns.

Importantly, the eBook explains that the boundary is often the third problem, not the first. Before setting one, it recommends three steps: Fix Your Story, Hold the Crucial Conversation, and Decide on Your Boundary. This means separating facts from assumptions, talking openly about what is happening, and determining whether a boundary is necessary if the problem continues.

It also introduces three practical skills for approaching boundaries more effectively: Own Your Power. Own Your Responsibility, Do an Honest Threat Assessment, and Prepare with a Plan. These skills encourage people to recognise the choices available to them, consider both the risks of speaking up and the risks of staying silent, and prepare carefully for the conversation.

A key message runs throughout: a boundary isn’t a demand designed to control someone else’s behaviour. It is a clear statement about what you will do to take responsibility for your own needs. The aim is to make the problem clear, explain what you need and invite the other person into a conversation about how to move forward.

Overall, the eBook offers a practical approach to workplace boundaries, accountability and speaking up, showing how addressing problems earlier can help prevent misunderstandings and unresolved concerns from becoming bigger workplace issues.
